Through much rigorous engagement, Liberty University’s Counselor Education & Supervision PhD program prepares its students to become effective, but yet, compassionate counselor educators in the counseling field. Having taught for over 16 ½ years in early childhood education, this program gave me a new perspective on the art of teaching. My passion for teaching has been renewed through constructive feedback and engagement with professors, colleagues, students, and textbook materials. My working philosophy of teaching is forever evolving, and I have come to realize that as I teach, I also learn…about myself and about my students.
As bell hooks (author of Teaching to Transgress) reminds us, “The classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy.” I view teaching as a relational and transformative process that nurtures both intellect and character. In counselor education, learning becomes most powerful when students are invited to reflect, engage, and apply knowledge with purpose. My approach integrates experiential learning, cultural humility, and ethical reflection to create inclusive, growth-oriented environments. Teaching, for me, is the practice of modeling authenticity and empathy while guiding future counselors to become agents of healing, advocacy, and change.
